Automotive Image Recognition Technology to Develop by Japanese Companies.

Published On Nov. 4, 2017 By Sagar

Japanese Automotive supplier Denso Corp. and image recognition technology developer FotoNation Ltd. are going to develop a cabin sensing innovation, announced joint technology agreement on Nov. 3, FotoNation Ltd. is a subsidiary of Xpiri Corp.

FotoNation is a developer of next-generation computational imaging algorithms. Denso is an automotive supplier of advanced technology, systems and components in the areas of thermal, power train control, electronics and information and safety.

Denso said Driver Status Monitor, an active safety product currently used in commercial vehicles, it's performance will be improve with help of the FotoNation. Improvements in such parts also will open up the development of next-generation products to be used in passenger vehicles including a system to help drivers return to driving mode during Level 3 of autonomous drive.

The collaboration of these two will combine FotoNation's experience in facial image recognition and neural network technology with Denso's cabin sensing innovations. They aims to achieve sophisticated driver status detection, which will not be affected by differences between individual faces or by sunglasses, masks and other facial coverings in the vehicle cabin where environmental light changes dramatically.

Detection of more features will be allowed by using FotoNation’s facial image recognition and neural networks technologies rather than use of conventional detection method based on the relative positions of the eyes, nose, mouth and other facial regions. Denso will developed new functions, including detection of driver's gaze direction and facial expression more accurately, to understand the state of mind of the driver in order to help create more comfortable vehicles.

CEO of Xperi, Jon Kirchner said that this partnership will play a significant role in paving the way to the ultimate goal of safer roadways through use of our imaging and facial analytics technologies and Denso’s vast experience in the space. Moreover, he said company is excited to partner with Denso to innovate in such a dynamic field.

To enabling the future of autonomous driving important component, is to understand the status of driver and engage them at the right time, said Yukihiro Kato, senior executive director of the information and safety systems business group of Denso. I believe this collaboration with Xperi will help accelerate our innovative ADAS product development by bringing together the unique expertise of both our companies.
